We are happy to announce the appointment of six new Partners in the Patents team: Alexandra Seymour-Pierce, Ben Beasley, Chris Newcombe, Emma Longland, George Hudson and Kathryn Rose.

Alexandra Seymour-Pierce joined Venner Shipley from another leading IP firm in 2018 and is a member of our Electronics, Software and Communications team in London. Alexandra graduated from the University of Durham with a first-class honours degree in Physics with English Literature, with a focus on condensed matter physics, particularly semiconductor materials and solar cell structures. She also has a PhD in Engineering Physics from University College London. Alexandra is an active member of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) and is currently chair of the CIPA Congress Committee.

Kathryn Rose is also a member of our London Electronics, Software and Communications team, and joined the firm in 2014 as a Trainee Patent Attorney.  Having graduated with a first-class honours degree, Kathryn went on to complete a PhD in Glaciology at the University of Southampton where her research involved the development of autonomous, wireless, multi-sensor probes for deployment in the first environmental sensor network on a glacier. Kathryn has experience in EPO opposition work and manages the prosecution of global patent portfolios, working closely with a variety of domestic and overseas attorneys. Kathryn also has significant in-house experience, having been seconded to the patents departments of three companies during her time at Venner Shipley.

Ben Beasley is based in our Chemical and Life Sciences team in London and joined in 2013 as a Trainee Patent Attorney. Ben graduated from the University of Huddersfield with a first-class master’s degree in Chemistry with Industrial Experience and subsequently obtained a PhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry from the University of Warwick. As well as routinely providing advice to clients in relation to the potential infringement and validity of IP rights, Ben manages the prosecution of global patent portfolios, working closely with both domestic and overseas attorneys. Ben also has significant in-house experience, having been seconded to the patents departments of two companies.

Chris Newcombe is based in our Chemical and Life Sciences team in our London office. He joined Venner Shipley in 2013 as a Trainee Patent Attorney after graduating from the University of Bristol with an undergraduate master’s in Chemistry. Chris has been seconded to the patents department of a multi-national company for several years. During this secondment he has worked closely with inventors and commercial stakeholders across the business, providing advice on patent filing strategy, invention mining, freedom-to-operate matters, and assertion opportunities.

Emma Longland joined Venner Shipley in 2021 from another leading IP firm and is part of the Chemical and Life Sciences Team, based in Cambridge. Emma has degrees in Natural Sciences and a PhD from the University of Cambridge, where she specialised in Biochemistry and the changes that occur in the development of cervical cancer. Emma has particular experience in EPO opposition and appeal work, including in complex multi-party proceedings such as those involving the foundational CRISPR patents. Since joining Venner Shipley, Emma has been very active in the Cambridge start-up community, providing IP strategy advice and services to BioTech spinouts and their investors.

George Hudson joined Venner Shipley as a Trainee Patent Attorney in 2011. He graduated from the University of Strathclyde with a master’s degree with distinction in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. His work focuses on drafting and prosecuting patent applications in all areas of mechanical engineering and he is also experienced in handling post-grant oppositions, providing freedom to operate opinions, and advising on the protection of designs.

Siân Gill, Managing Partner, added: “We are excited to welcome these incredibly talented and ambitious individuals to the partnership. Four of the appointments started at our firm as trainees, which is evidence to the value we put on internal growth and development. Our new partners have each made a substantial contribution to the ongoing success of our people, our clients and the firm’s culture and I am confident that each and every one of them will play a pivotal role in helping us to continue to deliver a quality service. Congratulations to all!

In addition to the six promotions to the partnership, Venner Shipley has also promoted Caroline Allen to Patent Director and Steven Davis, Sudhakar Brodie and Ting Wu to Senior Associate.
