Profile
Ben is a European and Chartered Patent Attorney in our Chemical and Life Sciences team.
Ben has experience drafting and prosecuting European, national and international patent applications which relate to a wide variety of technical areas, including organic chemistry, chemical engineering, pharmaceuticals, materials, food and drink, catalysis and medical devices. Ben has assisted with oppositions and appeals before the European Patent Office and he also has experience of assisting with freedom-to-operate, infringement, validity and IP due diligence opinions.
In addition to private practice work at Venner Shipley, Ben has experience of being seconded to the patents department of a company which is active in a broad range of fields, including chemistry, life sciences, electronics and materials. During this secondment Ben worked closely with inventors and assisted with the management of the company’s patent portfolio.
Education
Ben graduated from the University of Huddersfield with a first-class master’s degree in Chemistry with Industrial Experience. As part of his degree, Ben undertook a year’s work experience at a major pharmaceutical company, where he was responsible for supporting the introduction of cutting-edge process analytical technology.
He then went on to complete a PhD in organic chemistry at the University of Warwick. Ben’s PhD research focused on the reactions and chemistry of oxetanes and resulted in multiple publications in well-known chemistry journals.
Ben has also succesfully completed the CIPA litigation skills course.
