Brexit and Patents: No Change

Brexit is happening, and the UK leaves the EU today. As a result the UK will no longer be part of the EU by the time many of you read this.

Venner Shipley would like to take the opportunity to remind its clients and associates that the patent system will not be affected by Brexit. In particular, the granting of European patents by the European Patent Office (EPO) will not be changed in any way by the UK leaving the EU.

As made clear in this recently issued notice from the EPO, the UK’s withdrawal from the EU will have no impact on its status within the European Patent Organisation, the EPO will still be able to grant patents effective in the UK and UK professionals can still act as representatives.

We at Venner Shipley see ourselves as a European firm, with offices in the UK and mainland Europe. Brexit will not affect our ability to provide Tier 1 European intellectual property advice to our clients, and we look forward to continuing to work with you in the future.
