Associate, Dr Monifa Phillips graduates with a PhD in Physics from the University of Glasgow

Dr Monifa Phillips, An Associate in our Electronics and Engineering team has recently graduated from the University of Glasgow with a PhD in Physics. Joining the Venner Shipley team in October 2018, Monifa has had to juggle completing her academic studies while handling her increasing professional workload. Here she shares her experience juggling the two:

“I’m really pleased to have finally graduated with a PhD in physics from the University of Glasgow. People always ask me what I’m going to pursue next, and I’m always very proud to tell them that I’ve already started training to become a patent attorney at Venner Shipley LLP after attending one of their recruitment days in 2017 (the early bird really does catch the worms). I’ve actually been working for 8 months now, during which time I passed my viva and completed the corrections required for the final submission of my thesis. Any PhD students will know that after initially submitting your thesis for examination, there is no clear timeline detailing when you’ll be called for your viva, or how long your corrections will take. In truth, I wasn’t sure how I’d navigate this grey area with my new job, where I was due to start in October 2018. In the end, I needn’t have worried: Venner Shipley (the firm and all my new colleagues) were incredibly supportive and understanding. Here I am, a happy graduate and a contented employee!”
