Meet our team: Steven Davis

As part of our ‘meet our team’ series, we ask Steven Davis, one of our newly promoted ESC (Electronics, Software and Communications) senior associates based in our London office, about his journey to becoming a patent attorney, what he loves about Venner Shipley and what else he enjoys in life.

When did you join Venner Shipley and what office do you work in?
I joined Venner Shipley in 2017. I work primarily in London, but spend some time in the Guildford office as well.

How did you get into working in IP or your current role?
Having done a year in industry as an engineer as part of my degree, I was looking for alternative careers which still made use of my education. Prior to graduating, I attended a careers talk from a patent attorney at university, and it sounded really interesting. After doing some further research, I decided to pursue this career. I accepted the role at Venner Shipley in particular as the company stood out to me as being very strong on training, which, given the reputation of the qualification process, was vitally important to me.

What areas do you currently specialise in in your role?
Patent drafting, filing and prosecution. I primarily handle cases at the EPO and the UKIPO, as well as international applications. I generally work in the fields of software, AI, and telecoms, but also handle cases in the automotive sector, robotics, sports technology, as well as others.

What do you enjoy most about working in IP law?
I like working with inventors, understanding their contributions and helping them protect their inventions. I also enjoy learning about the developments across various fields of technology. Recently I’ve gotten involved in arranging and hosting internal sessions on recent developments in case law, practice, talks from external speakers, etc., which I’ve also found interesting.

What recent successes/achievements have you had (personal/professional)?
I am really pleased to have been promoted to senior associate this month. Outside work, I’ve enjoyed recently starting to compete in local trail run races, and have recently found out that I have got a place at London Marathon next year.

What’s the best thing about working at Venner Shipley?
I think the collegiate culture – everyone is approachable and supportive, and if you have any particular issue or problem, people will always make time to assist.

What do you think is the next big thing (or on the horizon) in IP?
Slightly cliched answer but AI, both in terms of how the law develops to accommodate this field of technology, and in how it can be used to support our work as patent attorneys.

What do you do outside of work?
I enjoy getting out for fresh air in the nearby Surrey hills, either dog walking with my wife, or running with my local running club (or occasionally with the dog as well).
